Cereal Bank

ACON is working on a cereal bank project. The idea is to buy cereals (e.g. maize) from the biochar farmers within our network at times when resources are plenty and the harvests are good. The cereals will then be stored for later usage when shortages appear as a result of prolonged droughts or failed harvests. Most farmers do not have the means to store cereals for a longer period in an appropriate storage place. With periods of droughts being fairly frequent in western Kenya, availability of cereals can fluctuate and in times of serious shortages prices can even double. The cereal bank store is under construction at the project site in Mwamba village. The work on the building is almost finished, as the only task remaining is the painting of the walls. ACON will soon start with the actual purchasing of cereals to fill up the store.
